Yesterday was a busy day. I brought two of our horses out to put
in their pasture. We keep them off of it in the winter so the grass grows. I took them out of the trailer and they
smelled the sweet grass in their nostrils.
I lead them to the pasture and set them free. They ran a few hundred
yards and then their heads went down to graze on the tender green grass.
Had a few chores to
do at the ranch today so I got right with it.
First on the list was the horse water trough as it needed to
be drained and scrubbed out.
It was the perfect
day to work on that as it was near 80! I just love this time of year as the bugs
are not out yet. After getting that done I went and filled a few other
livestock tanks, plus the 2 guzzlers we have (they are for small critter… tree squirrels,
chipmunks, quail, turkey and rabbits.
From there I jumped
on the quad grabbed some hay and went to
check on the 2 next cows I figured were close to calving. I found them up the
road munching on green grass. They looked ok so went back to get my lunch out
of my truck., I figured it was such a beautiful day I would find some where special
to have a picnic, just my dog “Foxy” and I.
I went and got a chair from in the barn and slung it on the
quad with my ice chest and my book all tied down with baling twine, I headed to
a place on a bluff over looking part of the
ranch. It’s a place we plan to build a cabin on some day. I found a nice shady place under an oak tree
and set up my chair and used the ice chest for a footstool. It was perfect! From
where I was sitting I could see the cows across the way roaming the upper pasture.
I had my binoculars with me and could also see some deer grazing not to far from
the cattle.
I opened up my ice
chest and got out my lunch. Oh perfect.. as I remember I packed left overs from
the night before. We had bar b q ed a few T bones steaks from one of the steers
we harvested last fall. It was delightful last night and perfect for today! Along
with some cool cucumbers with ranch dressing it was quite a meal….As I ate my
lunch enjoying the view, Foxy was close by begging for some scraps. I gave her
tidbits here and there, then when I was done I gave her the bone. She was very
content working over that bone laying beside me enjoying the afternoon.
I got my book out and read a few pages but couldn’t get into
it today. So put it back on the quad I picked up my binoculars and started
scanning the hill sides. I saw some wild turkeys up under the big red oak
trees. We sure have the turkeys this year!
Soon it was time to get
back to my chores, so loaded the quad up and made my way back down the bluff I
just let the quad roll down…. no motor
on… its so peaceful that way.
Back to horse pasture I went to checked for ground squirrel
holes, they can be bad deal for your horse pasture. The horses can get running
around and get a leg caught in a hole and break their leg. So I take a bucket
and some rocks to fill some holes.
By then it had been awhile and I figured it was time to
check on the two cows again just to be sure as they sure look like they are
ready to calve. When I rode up on the quad they were acting kind of strange,
then all of a sudden they took off with all the rest of the cows tails high up
in the air. They look so funny! Then I remember they had called for 20% chance
of rain tonight. But I did still keep an eye on them for more than an hour to
just be sure before I left.
It was getting time to gather up my things and get home so I
loaded up Foxy in the truck, and started out toward the main road. I saw a young
snake slither across the road I was surprised to see one out so really this
year. I stopped and got out of the pick up to see if it was a gopher snake or
ratter. I’m please to say it was gopher snake! Well that’s about it for my day!
